Ligar - A digital/film hybrid camera

Shoot digital versions of your film shots, kind of.

Another Kickstarter campaign that could be interesting is Ligar, marketed as a hybrid film and digital camera, although I think that’s pushing it a bit. Still, it’s an interesting concept and clearly people agree, as it has already beaten it’s goal by 400%.

If you can get beyond the slightly troubling AI generative showcase video, you’ll find that this isn’t really a hybrid camera but a bolt on, that sits on your hot shoe, duplicating your film shot digitally. Now, this isn’t going to be an apples to apples shot. For a start it doesn’t shoot through the same lens, instead capturing through its own 3.2mm f2.8 lens and 12mp sensor, which is more like a smart phone than anything else. However it does shoot video too, at 1440 x 1440. That square format alongside the average picture quality might not be to everybody’s tastes but could be fun and at only 40g and costing only £99 it could be worth a look and might suit those who shoot POV photo walks.

Mounted to your hot shoe, the camera. syncs to your shutter, capturing the same moment as the film camera.

Similarly to Fujifilm’s latest Instax mini eco cinema, it has a handful of what it calls Time Capsule filters, each one giving the look of shots from a different decade. The example shots on the Kickstarter don’t exactly jump out as inspirational but it’s a trick some will surely enjoy.

That lens. might be too wide for many but the Ligar does have a 5x digital zoom, giving you full frame equivalent coverage of 28 -105mm.

The Ligar is rechargeable, via a USB-C cable, which is included. There’s also a 17mm filter thread.

I’m not overawed by the Ligar but I’m happy to be proved wrong, so I will be backing it, simply to try it out and see whether the reality is worth the outlay.

You can back it yourself here.
